State NAP Tax Credits Now Available

Get the most out of your charitable donation!

Mental Health America of Greater Indianapolis (MHAGI) is proud to announce the receipt of Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) State Tax Credits.

These credits are available on a first come, first served basis only from 8/1/09 - 6/1/10.

Mental Health America of Greater Indianapolis (MHAGI) has received an allocation of $4,709 in tax credits for 2009-2010 from the State of Indiana, establishing a fundraising goal of $9,418.   We want to inform you how you can support MHAGI and receive credit on your Indiana State taxes.  Eligible donors include any person, business, or organization that has an Indiana income tax liability.

Here's how it works:

By making a donation to MHAGI ($100 or greater), you will be able to utilize Neighborhood Assistance Program Tax Credits - allowing you to get half of your contribution back as a TAX CREDIT on your Indiana taxes next spring, with the option of also claiming the entire gift as a deduction on your itemized federal tax return.

Not only will you get a great break on your taxes next April; you'll provide funding for a much-needed program within the agency.  This means that your gift will be worth more than twice as much as it actually costs you.

Here's an example - if you give a gift of $100 or more, along with the contribution, you'll complete a Form NC-10 (downloadable from the IRS or available through our office) that we will then forward to the State on your behalf.  Several weeks later, the State will send you a letter to file with your taxes that indicates you have a tax credit for $50 (or half of whatever you have donated over $100).  That means, when it comes time to pay your state taxes next April, you will owe $50 less!  If you also file an itemized federal tax return, you can also claim a deductible contribution of the entire $100, which will save you even more!

MHAGI utilizes the donations from the NAP tax credit program to support the Crisis & Suicide Intervention Services (CSIS) program.  The program provides 24-hour telephone crisis counseling and referral for central Indiana individuals in crisis as well as a variety of community agencies.  The purpose of the Crisis Line is to assist each caller in awareness, strategies, skill development, and appropriate actions to maintain a safe environment.  A phone conversation with a trained professional is an immediate defense in maintaining workplace or family stability and overcoming obstacles impeding mental wellness.  This support is needed more than ever, as we are seeing twice as many of our usual calls being critical in nature, meaning the individual has the means and a plan to carry out their suicide.  Through NAP, our Crisis Line will be able to respond to over 6,000 callers in crisis within the next year. Every call is assessed for suicide lethality.  In the event that a caller is in imminent danger of suicide or harming others, emergency services are contacted to provide on-the-scene intervention.

When sending in your donation, please include a signed copy of IRS form NC-10 - download from http://www.in.gov/dor/files/nc102098.pdf.

On the form, in the “Organization’s Indiana Taxpayer Identification number” field type: 35-0928128. In the “Program Number” field type:  NP-009-046. It is very important that the donor sign his/her name, include his/her social security or federal identification number, and check the type of income tax return he/she intends to file with the State of Indiana for the current tax year on the form.

Mail the donation and the form to:
